The Grand Rapids School District limited the access to their buildings Friday morning, following notification from the Itasca County Sheriff's Department had threatened suicide near a middle school.
Police learned the man may have been in possession of a gun.
According to a message from Superintendent Joe Silko, he got a call from authorities saying an adult male had contacted the crisis response center threatening suicide.
Silko says when law enforcement traced the man's cell phone, it showed he was in the area of Robert J. Elkington Middle School. Tracking later showed the man was in the area of Southwest Elementary School, and then back in the area of the middle school, according to Silko's message.
Silko said the man was found in his residence and the matter is being handled by law enforcement. At no time was that man ever in one of the school buildings.
Silko also said that at no time were any of the students in danger. He said the schools were up and running again in the message sent around 9:30 a.m.
