There are changes coming for Essentia Health in Duluth. The former Daugherty's Appliance building on 6th Avenue East is under construction.
Essentia Health's Media Relations Specialist Kim Kaiser said the hospital was approached to purchase the building when Daugherty's closed in 2008.
"The campus is so landlocked so we're always looking for more opportunities," Kaiser said.
Kaiser said the building will house support staff, its communications department and their Institute of Rural Health. The building already houses a data center for Essentia information, operated by the newly-integrated Duluth business, Involta.
Work on the former appliance building should be complete by the end of February.
Meanwhile, Essentia is also making progress on its new Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) facility.
The new space will house 18 private single-patient rooms, each featuring their own couches, single pullouts, and double beds for parents with premature infants to spend the night.
The entire project for the NICU is slated to wrap up by September 2013.
