The editorial boards of the Duluth News Tribune and the Mesabi Daily News have endorsed Republican incumbent Chip Cravaack in Minnesota's 8th District race.
In Monday's endorsement, the News Tribune called Cravaack "passionate, strong, and effective." The editorial applauds Cravaack for supporting changes he says are needed to save Medicare, while it criticizes Democrat Rick Nolan, saying he doesn't have a plan to assure the future of Medicare.
On Sunday, The Virginia-based Mesabi Daily News cited his record on mining initiatives on the Iron Range, his accessibility to constituents, and his bipartisanship as reasons for their endorsement.
"And we do believe it is vital that the congressman not lose sight of representing a constituency that has a traditional strong leaning to the Democratic Party; while maintaining his core conservative beliefs," the endorsement says.
The endorsement also says that "Rep. Cravaack has not been wedded to right-wing Republican partisanship, as his opponents try to claim. He has bucked the GOP on several labor-related pieces of legislation."
The Mesabi Daily News endorsed Democrat Jim Oberstar in the 2010 election, while the News Tribune endorsed Cravaack. Cravaack unseated Oberstar, who served 18 terms as the 8th District representative.
