Over 30 horse riding enthusiasts hit the trails on Saturday to raise money for wounded veterans.
Jane Ecklund hosted the competitive horse ride just outside of Duluth in Fredenberg Township. Riders paid to participate in the event and the proceeds benefited the Horses for Heroes organization, which is located in New Mexico.
“They work [veterans] through a therapeutic program with ranch work and horses free of charge to the veterans,” Ecklund said.
Amanda Keough, who rode in the event, owns four horses and said the animals are sure to help veterans.
“It's like any animal, you know, they're big and furry and they make you feel good about yourself,” Keough said.
The Duluth Area Horse Trail Alliance sponsored the event that included several obstacles, such as a trek into a stream.
Judges ranked horses reactions as well as rider control of the animals. Ribbons were awarded to the top six riders, but everyone enjoyed the event.
“This is what I do, this is my sanctuary you might say. It just makes me feel good so I like to ride,” Greg Allen said after his ride.
This was the first charity event Ecklund has hosted, but she said it wouldn't be the last.
"It was a lot more work than I realized it was going to be, never having done this before but I hope to do another one in the spring,” Ecklund said.
