Itasca Co. Woman Suffers Severe Burns

On Tuesday, around 3pm, the Itasca County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call of a structure fire/ grass fire at a rural farm on Monson Lake Road in northeastern Itasca County.

Authorities say 72-year-old Patricia Pauna, of Monson Lake Road, attempted to put out the grass fire with a shovel and received severe burns to her legs and arms.

The fire was started from a burning pit in the backyard of the residence and spread to tall grass and several out buildings.

Nashwauk Fire, Keewatin Fire, Minnesota DNR Forestry Fire, Buck Lake First Responders , Nashwauk Ambulance and well as Hibbing Advanced Life Support (ALS) Ambulance where called.

Due to Pauna’s severe burns she was airlifted to Essentia Health St. Mary’s Duluth Hospital Burn Unit. The fire was contained soon after fire personnel arrived.
