A memorial service, put on by Essentia Health, was held at Lakeview Covenant Church in Duluth to honor those who died while in the hospice program. It's put on every year and this service celebrated people who passed away between July 2011 and June 2012.
The event gave friends and family a chance to grieve with people who have experienced a similar loss. It also gave hospital staff a chance to reconnect with families they worked with.
The service did not have a specific religious affiliation, but people lit candles, listened to speakers and sang songs. While the event was set up to celebrate life, organizers said it gets emotional.
"People do cry," Family Grief Support Provider Ellen Hufschmidt said. "They find it very emotional. They find it very peaceful. They can just be alone with their own feelings and they find it very healing."
