Duluth School Board Sets 11.9 Percent Max Levy Increase

Get ready for a potential tax increase if you're living in the Duluth School District.
Monday afternoon, the school board approved a maximum levy increase of 11.9 percent, which Business Director Bill Hanson told Eyewitness News, is equal to about a $30 annual property tax increase for a $100,000 home.
Hanson said "this recommendation will allow the board the most flexibility as they discuss [the budget] over the next three months when they'll set the final number."
Hanson said more property taxes could help pay down next year's projected deficit of between $3 and $4 million.
The maximum levy increase got about 15 minutes of discussion, and saw little debate before passing 5-1, member Art Johnston dissenting.
The proposed increase could shrink before a budget is passed in December, but it's guaranteed not to grow.
Whatever increase the school board approves is separate from St. Louis County and City of Duluth increases. All three bodies pass budgets in December.
