College Students Give Back

Hundreds of College of St. Scholastica (CSS) students, faculty, and staff spent Wednesday giving back for the annual fall Community Service Day.
More than 1,000 peopled from CSS signed up to volunteer their time at a variety of 60 different locations. Eyewitness news caught up with a group of about 20 students helping out the Lake Superior Zoo.
Students such as CSS freshman, David Ohnstad say they get so much out of their college experience that it is important to give back to the community.
"The college gives us so much, education. And a lot of scholarships come from people who give back to the college, so it's only right we give back to the community as well," Ohnstad said.
Volunteers at the zoo decorated for the upcoming "Boo at the zoo" event. Some helped out by making spooky decorations, while others spruced up the new chicken coop with a fresh coat of paint.
CSS students and staff were out all over the Duluth community today giving back. The college called on a record number of volunteers this year as a way to recognize CSS's 100th birthday year celebration, according to the school.
College classes were canceled Wednesday so students and faculty are able to take part.
Helping out at the zoo was just one of the many ways to give back. As in the past, several student groups volunteered together. Some worked on trails throughout the day for Duluth Parks and Recreation. Others did some fall gardening at Community Action Duluth's Seeds of Success, among many other options.
