Work is finishing up on the newly renovated ice rink in Duluth Heights.

The old one had started deteriorating enough where it was becoming dangerous for the kids.

Thanks to a $5,000 grant for materials, the rink has been re-done. Parents and volunteers have spent countless hours doing the work.

"Volunteers are the heart and soul, not only here at Duluth Heights, but at all of the hockey rinks in Duluth. In hockey, people think it's a winter sport. But we're here year-round, getting the rink ready," Ken Zwak said. He's a parent and coach.

The city has lost so many rinks in the past two decades, according to Zwak. "Our rinks are on life support. We need the community to keep stepping up and helping keep them going."

Zwak said that they are proud that Hobey Baker winner Jack Connolly mentioned in a recent article that he grew up playing hockey in the Heights.
