The United Way of Greater Duluth called its 21st annual Chili Cook-Off at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center Thursday night. About 2,000 people came to taste more than 40 different chili recipes.

This year, 46 different organizations and restaurants took part in the cook-off, each competing with a unique chili recipe. Eyewitness News found some pretty unlikely ingredients as we checked out some of the booths. We found yams in one recipe, jalapeno bacon in another, and in the Lake Avenue Restaurant and Bar chili, mashed potatoes.

The restaurant's Tony Beran said they blend the mashed potatoes with a small grain and fry it into little pieces. He said it acts as a meat substitute in their vegan chili.

The men from Lake Avenue took home three awards Thursday night including one for the best vegetarian chili.

According to a news release, the cook-off "kicks off United Way's local campaign that mobilizes community resources to support more than 50 health and human service programs in the Greater Duluth area."
