Superior Police responded to a non-responsive motorcycle rider in shallow water near Barkers Island on Wednesday night.

Police released on Thursday that the victim is 75-year-old, Jack E. Povaser of Superior, who remains in critical condition.

According to Superior Police Chief Chuck LaGesse, squads responded to Marina Drive and the entrance to Barkers Island just before 9 p.m Wednesday. It was there that a witness watched Povaser slowly drive between the barricades into a washout area.

Police say the witnessed looked back again and didn't see the motorcyclist. The witness walked over and found Povaser and the motorcycle in a shallow creek at the bottom of a gulley. That's when the witness called 911.

The road into Barkers Island washed away during the flash flooding in June. A witness on the scene told Eyewitness News that emergency workers were performing chest pumps on Povaser for some time. Lagesse said Gold Cross Ambulance did take him to a Duluth hospital.
