The mayor of Virginia announced Tuesday night that he is going to resign from his elected position.

Mayor Steve Peterson made the announcement at a city council meeting in Virginia.

He told Eyewitness News he made the decision because of his full-time job at the IRRRB. Since November, Peterson has been the executive director of development for the state agency.

Peterson said he's honored to have served his community, getting them through some big moments, like the police chief issue and the Essentia affiliation talks.

He said he just doesn't have time to do both jobs anymore.

He was elected to mayor in 2007. Peterson's resignation is effective October 1.
