Duluth city councilors voted 6-3 to ban the use of tobacco products on the Lakewalk, at Leif Erikson Park and at the Lake Place in their meeting Monday night.

The three councilors voting in the opposition were Jay Fosle, Garry Krause and Sharla Gardner.

The ordinance also includes a ban on substances labeled "not safe for human consumption." You can find those labels on products like incense, which is also known as synthetic marijuana.

Before the proposal passed, the owner of a company that sells that very incense, voiced his support of the smoking ban. Last Place on Earth owner Jim Carlson questioned why the proposal doesn't include banning smoking in Canal Park, on Park Point and near the Lester River.

Gardner proposed an amendment removing the tobacco ban from the proposal, but it failed by an 8-1 vote.
