nullIn court on Monday, Derek Nathan Klingfus pleaded guilty to two counts of assault.

The Babbitt man stabbed his girlfriend's toddler back in January. Witnesses reported he was acting bizarrely before the incident.

When a police officer responded to the home in Babbitt, Klingfus continued to threaten the girl. The officer fired his duty weapon once, hitting and injuring Klingfus. The little girl survived the lacerations to her upper torso and leg.

The officer's use of force was ruled justified.

Klingfus is paralyzed from the chest down now. His attorney Bruce Williams said Monday that Klingfus is remorseful about what happened. "He doesn't really remember what happened."

According to Williams, the plea agreement calls for a 75 month prison sentence. Williams said the agreement was reached with the approval of the victims.

Sentencing is in October.
