The Green Corps hosted a tree-planting party September 9 that took over the intersection of Eighth Street and Eighth Avenue East in Duluth. Volunteers dug holes and planted maple, oak, crab apple and Japanese lilac trees on the block. Organizers said trees have many beneficial qualities, including beauty and shade.
“People in Duluth love their trees,” Shawna MullenEardley, with the Green Corps, said. "There's a lot of other benefits people don't always think about. They act as shade for your home to cool it.”
There will be five parties in September in five different neighborhoods. MullenEardley said she hopes to plant 150 trees by the end of the project.
