New plans for work on Haines Road qualify it as the largest individual road project ever for St. Louis County. On Thursday, the public got the latest details.
The $13 million Haines Road project covers a 2.25 mile stretch that connects West Duluth to Hermantown. A tight curve will be widened, and there will be three lanes total. Curbs, gutters and turn lanes will also be added.
But Resident Engineer Steve Krasaway explained the changes aren't just for motorists.
"Even before the project we noticed a lot of people use the road walk and bike up and down it. And we've added pedestrian facilities such as wider shoulders on both sides, sidewalk on one side, and we've also added an underpass at the Superior Hiking Trail access for snowmobiling and hikers so they have a safe crossing of the new roadway," Krasaway said.
Changes were already scheduled for Haines Road, but had to be revised and accelerated after the June floods. The project should be finished by November 2013.
