One look at Duluth's hillside and you can't miss the new Lincoln Park Middle School. The building with its brick, copper, and stainless steel facade sits on a 70-acre site and boasts sprawling views of the St Louis River bay.
Technology is enhanced, with SmartBoards in every classroom. Physical activity is a breeze, with an artificial turf field, a new gym with 3 full-sized basketball courts, and an 8-lane swimming pool with seating for 500. Property and Risk Manager Kerry Leider said that opens a door for competitions, "It will really allow Duluth for the first time to host events where you have to have that spectator opportunity."
Over at the newly renovated Ordean-East Middle School, improvements have been made, but the building's character was maintained. In the classroom, old wood floors are still intact, and spaces are larger. This school also has a large gym and new swimming pool. Features that Leider said the community can use when class is out for the day.
"The building's themselves can be close down in a manner that will allow us to have the public in after school hours in the areas most interesting for public use, yet still secure other areas of the building so we don't have to provide that security, oversight, and cleaning."
Leider said opening up the middle school pools and gymnasiums for tournaments can also bring in revenue for the district.
The first day of school for students in these buildings is September 10th. The public can take a look at the spaces during community open houses on Sunday, September 16th from 1pm-5pm.
