Duluth had representation from Sweden on Friday night. The country's ambassador to the U.S. was the keynote speaker during a dinner for Duluth Sister Cities International.
The event celebrates the 25th anniversary of the sister city relationships with Petrozavodsk, Russia and Vaxjo, Sweden. Jonas Hafstrom said Sweden and the U.S. have a centuries-old relationship that's become part of our modern day path to development.
"Sweden is one of America's oldest friends. The first Swedes came to here 375 years ago, and as I said, we have many many Swedes leaving the old country and coming here to shape a new future," Hafstrom said.
Hafstrom said the international relationship also promotes idea-sharing on policy and government over things like green technology and jobs.
The Sister Cities exchange program began during the Eisenhower presidency.
