Visit Duluth spokesman, Gene Shaw, says the arrival of the Tall Ships on Wednesday has been delayed by weather. He said Tuesday night's storm and high winds "caused most ships to seek shelter and wait out the storm." Eyewitness News learned late Wednesday that while one ship is already here, the rest will not start arriving until 8:00pm.
Shaw said some ships waited out the storm in the Apostle Islands area, and there was one that docked in Hancock, Michigan.
According to Erin Johnson, Event Manager at the Bayfield Chamber of Commerce, the Flagship Brig Niagara and Roald Amundson had docked in Bayfield overnight. The two ships left the area Wednesday morning.
Shaw said the winds are coming out of the Northwest today, so that will slow the ships down. In fact, it's become such a problem, that he said the Denis Sullivan likely will not arrive in the Duluth harbor until after the Parade of Ships on Thursday.
One ship that did make it into the Superior port is the Pride of Baltimore II. You can track the tall ships' progress as they make their way to Duluth for this weekend's festival at http://www.sailwx.info/shiptrack/tsc2010.phtml.
The U.S. Coast Guard has established a moving safety and security zone for the Tall Ships Parade of Sail on Thursday, July 29th. All vessels are required by federal law to remain 100 yards away from the Tall Ships while ships are in transit and 50 yards away while the ships are moored.
