For one week during the summer, Camp Courage plays host to smiles, laughs, friendships, and more importantly... courage.
Courage to battle adversity and do so without a single complaint. It is a week these kids feel independent, a week to feel like a kid again.
"The best thing they get from camp is new friendships..they're not alone with their disabilities..its really important they see that. A lot of new campers this year. Its really important not to feel alone," says MDA Health Service Coordinator Kim Gear.
Volunteer Jesse Hoffbauer says, "Everything they do here every day long is things they don't get to do all year long. Horseback riding..to playing hockey to swimming. Therapy pool. Everything they do here they don't get to do on a regular basis.
For 2nd year camper Kevin Ritchie, it was all about the hockey.
For these kids camp is a place to live freely....of course none of this would be possible without camp volunteers "Camp happens because of our camp volunteers," says Gear. "We have over 120 volunteers for the entire week. Giving their time and making sure the kids are safe. Without them camp would not happen."
