For the last 8 years, the Northwestern DECA students of Maple, Wisconsin have been driving to Duluth to help answer phones during the Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon.
The Northwestern DECA club is for the high school marketing students and has about 150 students. Members get together and learn how to interact in business situations. They compete with other DECA clubs and practice real life skills that they will use in the future.
The Marketing students help raise money and awareness for the Muscular Dystrophy Association and other local charities. But why give up their last big weekend of the summer?
Donnie Hissa, DECA President says that MDA is a really good organization to support. "Jarrett has MD so it's somebody close to home so a lot of people around here can relate to it because a lot of people know the Tuura Family and it's just a really good cause." Hissa said.
Jarrett Tuura went to school in Maple and graduated in the spring of 2008. Jarrett has Limb-Girdle Muscular Dystrophy and having someone in the school affected by MD makes these kids care even more.
"We've seen what he has to go through and before our school was handicapped accessible he could only go to certain parts of the school, I felt for him because he couldn't experience things like we could." Senior class Representative Carinda Larson said.
Marketing instructor and DECA Advisor, Jody Forsythe says this is a way for her students to give something back. "Muscular Dystrophy has become very important to them and also for our DECA association at the National Level too." Forsythe said.
The Northwestern DECA club holds a number of events throughout the school year raising money for MDA. The most popular events have been the MDA Silent Auction and middle school dance. The money raised from these events is donated to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
Their first event for this school year will be the Falloween Carnival for the Northwestern elementary students in October.
The dedication and hard work of the students have paid off. Northwestern DECA has been recognized by the MDA at both the State and National levels. "...This is their opportunity to see behind the scenes with marketing plus also be a part of giving back to our community. Kids who volunteer continue to be adults who volunteer and what a huge impact that has on our society." Forsythe said.
