Updated at: 06/23/2009 3:17 PM WDIO Requests Access to BallotsWDIO-TV is part of an effort asking that all rejected absentee ballots be made public. The request was made today in a letter sent to all 87 Minnesota counties and the Secretary of State's office. The Data Practices request is being made on behalf of WDIO-TV and four other stations owned by Hubbard Broadcasting. The Secretary of State says there are over twelve thousand rejected absentee ballots that have never been counted. Under the public access request, the envelopes and the ballots would be separate so that votes remained confidential. The stations are also asking for information on the absentee ballots at issue between Coleman and Franken. According to attorney Mark Anfinson representing Hubbard, if access is granted, the public would have a chance to see how counties varied in deciding which envelopes to accept or reject. A look at the uncounted ballots would also show if the current 312 vote margin would change. Current state law allows individual counties discretion in determining which unopened absentee ballots to accept or reject. |
