MORE ABOUT CARL SANDNESS:

What is your most memorable moment as an Educator?
"I have a few.  First, every time I observe a student that has really struggled with a problem or concept and then makes a breakthrough in comprehension, which is typically followed by a huge smile.  Second, while on educational leave, I received a letter from a parent that indicated their son was saddened to learn that I would not be teaching his class in the fall.  A colleague appended the letter with a note that read, 'You made a difference.'  Third, being nominated by my colleagues as a finalist for Teacher of the Year for the Hibbing United Educators this past year."
If you could pass along one piece of wisdom, what would it be?
"Carpe diem - seize the day. I would substitute: moment: how we respond to the present is the only control we truly have in life. The past cannot be changed and the future is not ours to know. As a result, we can only learn from our mistakes, live our moments as best we are able and pray for the best in what is yet to come."
If you weren't an educator what would you be?
"Either furthering my education as a student, because I love to learn, or an engineer, because I enjoy figuring out the how and why of something and then trying to improve it.
What do you do during summer vacation?
"I usually enroll in summer graduate courses though nowadays I am busy keeping up with our two energetic and inquisitive children for whom I am very blessed! We travel to visit family and friends in Minnesota, California, Oregon, Washington State and British Columbia, Canada. Other than that, I tackle the usual yearly maintenance list for our home."
Personal Information:
Mr. Sandness enjoys running, cross-country skiing, science fiction films, astronomy, technology, travel... and learning.  He lives with the love of his life and greatest supporter for the past 14 years, his wife Dorothy.  They have 2 children, Matthew, 4 and Ginny, 1 plus they have four cats.  Mr. Sandness says that several of his family members were at one time educators. He says, "...all of them have shaped my life for the best to make me who I am today."
