A week and a half ago, we told you the story of an Iron Range teenager, who was getting the prom makeover of a lifetime. Mandi Alto battled cancer and won, but still faces serious health issues. A non-profit group in New York flew her out for a whirlwind makeover in the Big Apple.
"mandi mandi mandi mandi!"
Talk about an excited welcome wagon for Mandi Alto and her stepmom Chris. They stepped off the plane in New York City last Wednesday, to a crowd of local teens, and the prom makeover organizer, Saranne Rothberg.
"new york here i come!'
Rothberg, founder of Comedy Cures, and her daughter whisked the Altos off to a celebrity salon. a manicure, facial, hair color, cut, and style were waiting.
"i'd like to brighten it up a little bit, but still natural.'
An extra special surprise during the makeover, a visit from Eveleth native Luke Gulbranson who is an Abercrombie model now.
"I thought it was cool she was coming out, from my hometown, figured say hi, special day, it's cool and interesting.'
After all the glam, it was time for a shopping spree for prom accessories at Macy's and then to the fashion designer.
Kathlin Argiro created a custom made prom dress for Mandi. 'i took her ideas, and let the magic begin."
A few pins and tucks and some handiwork from the celebrity make up artist, she was ready for her modeling lessons from supermodel emme, who is also a cancer survivor.
"i'm going to help mandi strut her stuff.'
Next, a catered dinner, a broadway show, Xanadu and a chance to meet the cast afterwards.
The Altos rested their heads in the presidential suite at a downtown hotel.. The next morning, they had the chance to tour the famous Ford modeling agency where their new friend Luke met them for an impromptu photo shoot.
But time was almost up, so the limo brought them one last place, the airport. 26 hours and a memories of a lifetime later, Mandi and Chris were headed back home.
"you have a magical prom, ok?"
It's not goodbye, but a friendship to be continued and experiences to be relived.
"i think everyone involved mandi makeover feels blessed meet family, blessed contributed, to make young cancer surivor dream come true.'
Mandi says she can't thank the whole team, and Saranne enough for the day, and the darker days from before.
"She helped me so much, comedy to help illness, memory will carry more across any more troubles i'll come across.'
