One person is in custody for an apartment fire in Hibbing. Authorities say two young children were alone in the home when it started Tuesday evening, but they escaped and didn't have any injuries.

Crews from the Hibbing Fire Department arrived on the scene at 4th Avenue E. around 5 p.m. According to a press release, a neighbor was alerted by two children, 5 and 2 years old, who live at the three-story apartment. The children said their mother was at work.

The apartment was full of smoke, and the fire was isolated to the kitchen area. The 5-year-old said the younger child was near the stove and some papers started on fire. The fire department said the smoke alarms were not working at the time.

Authorities said the mother is currently waiting formal charges from the county attorney.

Damage is estimated at $15,000. The Hibbing Fire Marshal and State Fire Investigator are looking into the cause.

The fire department said it is grateful for the children's safety. Officials reminded people to never leave young children unattended for any period of time.
