A Native American group wants the University of Minnesota and Minnesota Vikings to ban the use of the "Redskins" name when Washington plays the Vikings at TCF Bank stadium in November.

The Minneapolis-based "National Coalition Against Racism in Sports and Media" held a news conference Thursday outside TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. The Vikings are leasing the university's stadium for two seasons while their new $ 1 billion stadium is built on the site of the former Metrodome in downtown Minneapolis.

The group contends university administrators have been unwilling to meet with them to discuss the issue. They have some state lawmakers on their side. "It's unthinkable that we still have not succeeded in effectively addressing continued use of degrading racial slurs in our publicly-funded sports facilities," Rep. Karen Clark (DFL-Minneapolis) said at a news conference outside TCF Bank Stadium.

In a statement, the university said it considers the Redskins name to be "offensive and inappropriate." However, the university says it cannot regulate expression--even if some find it offensive-- by private parties on its property.

The coalition plans to hold a rally involving "thousands" outside the stadium on game day, Nov. 2.

Redskins owner Dan Snyder has vowed never to change the name, saying it honors Native Americans.
