Dorm rooms are full of boxes and containers at UMD, as the freshman class has moved in.

"It was fun organizing my room, and decorating. I'm really excited," said Jamie Persinger, from Zimmerman.

Luke Asfeld was it was a little stressful, but once he got his stuff in his room, he felt more at home. "I'm looking forward to meeting new people and expanding my horizons," he said.

And even though Dan Read left his wallet at home in Minneapolis, he still got checked in ok.

"I have mixed emotions. I'm excited, but it's weird not going to my high school anymore," he said.

And he had some help moving in, from Abby Berg and Alyssa Tate, upperclassmen who signed up to be coordinators for welcome week.

"I was in their shoes a year ago, and look at me now, I'm a helper!" Berg said.

We asked what their advice would be for the incoming freshmen. Tate told us, "Get involved this weekend. It's where you'll make many friends. Get out of your comfort zone."

2200 students are in the freshmen class at UMD this fall. That's up 7% from last year, according to Chancellor Dr. Lynn Black. He said there are also significantly more students of color, who will be new to UMD this year.

Black will be addressing the class at a convocation at 3:30pm on Friday.

UMD Police Chief Scott Drewlo said it was all hands on deck for move-in day. They work collaboratively with the Duluth Police Department, to handle situations on campus.

"We want to welcome students to UMD. They should enjoy it responsibly. And they should know that we will be on the lookout for illegal activities," Drewlo said. "We try and find ways to intervene in small problems before they become bigger problems."

Duluth Police told us they stopped at a couple of parties going on in the morning, but said that they hadn't had any major problems.
