The Republican candidate challenging Sen. Al Franken toured the Polymet plant site on Wednesday.

PolyMet plans on mining copper and precious metals near Babbitt, and then processing them at the old LTV mine site in Hoyt Lakes. Mike McFadden has said he strongly supports this project.

McFadden said Wednesday's only strengthened his resolve to fight hard to get the project going.

"I'm so encouraged and so enthused," he said. "You are standing at the doorstep of a new era on the Iron Range with projects like PolyMet, and we need our regulators to work with these companies to bring jobs and econimc opportunities to this region."

Sen. Franken has said he supports PolyMet's environmental review as long as taxpayers are protected from paying any cleanup costs.

Signs that say "McFadden Supports Chinese Steel" have been popping up around the Northland . They're put out by the DFL, calling out McFadden for recent comments on using cheap steel to build the Keystone pipeline.

McFadden told Eyewitness News he doesn't see any signs saying that Franken supports mining or the pipeline.
