The steam plant in Canal Park in Duluth looks innocent enough. But according to Lt. Governor Yvonne Prettner Solon, it's one of the biggest offenders for carbon emissions in the city. But she said we have an opportunity here, with the upcoming reconstruction of Superior Street, to change that.

"If we could find a way to combine the plant into heat and power, and replace those steam lines with water lines, we should be able to use far less water out of the lake," she explained.

Lt. Governor Yvonne Prettner Solon was in town on Wednesday, with other state leaders, for the Environmental Quality Board meeting. At the meeting, the recently released report titled "Minnesota and Climate Change: Our Tomorrow Starts Today," was discussed.

Tom Landwehr, commissioner of the Minnesota DNR, said climate change is affecting our plants and animals already. But the agency is working on ways to help our environment adapt.

"I feel pretty positive we will continue to have a really good natural environment, even if it's different, it will continue to be a natural environment. I'm a little concerned and distressed it won't be the natural one we inherited," he said.

Landwehr told us that if they know a certain species is not going to be suited to a warmer environment, they have to plan ahead and think about what kind of forestation or regeneration could help make the environment more resilient.

Prettner Solon said although she's proud of certain progress with renewable energy standards, there is still work to be done.
