The Duluth Police and Fire Departments announced on Tuesday that a fire on Superior Street was determined to be arson.
It happened just before 1 a.m. Monday on 1511 E. Superior St.
The size of the building brought 25 firefighters to the blaze. Responding crews included fire stations from Downtown, Lakeside, Lincoln Park, UMD, and Woodland.
Crews were able to quickly put the blaze out, which had spread to the first and second floors of the three-story building.
While there were no injuries and no one was inside the building at the time of the fire, substantial damage is estimated at over $150,000.
Minnesota Power cut power to the building as crews worked to put the fire out.
The Duluth Police Department provided street control, and Gold Cross was on scene with a standby ambulance.
Fire officials said there was another incident at 1510 E. Superior Street where a bottle with an accelerant was thrown through a window. They said it is unclear if there was any connection between the two incidents.
The Duluth Fire Department Fire Marshal's office and the Police Department are investigating the fire. Anyone with information is asked to call 1-800-723-2020. Rewards are offered.
