About 95 northwestern Wisconsin soldiers will deploy to Afghanistan this fall and assist in the U.S. drawdown in the country, the Wisconsin National Guard announced this week.

The Superior-based 950th Engineer Company, which has a detachment in Spooner, specializes in route clearance and combatting threats posed by improvised explosive devices.  The unit will deploy to eastern Afghanistan to conduct route clearance operations on the region's main supply routes.

During the deployment, management of military operations will be transferred from the U.S.-led Operation Enduring Freedom to the NATO-led Operation Resolute Support.  The Guard said the 950th will train, advise, and assist Afghan forces after the completion of the 2014 drawdown.

The 950th has not been to Aghanistan before, but it did deploy to Iraq in 2003 and 2010.

The Guard said it will hold a sendoff ceremony for the unit, with details to be announced at a later date.
