The U.S. Coast Guard says an injured woman needed to be evacuated from Isle Royale National Park in Lake Superior on Monday evening.

A distress beacon was received around 3:00 p.m. at the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre Trenton in Ontario from the camper on the northeastern side of the island.

The Coast Guard launched a response shortly after and park rangers arrived on the scene and provided initial care.

"This was a perfect example of the effectiveness of PLBs (personal locator beacons) on land or on water," said Keith West, chief duty officer at Sector Sault Ste. Marie. "We had assistance to the injured woman within 30 minutes of receiving the SARSAT signal, which wouldn't have happened without the PLB being set off because she was in a pretty remote area."

The injured woman was airlifted to Houghton, Mich. and transferred to local emergency medical services around 8:30 p.m.

The woman's identity and current condition is unknown.
