The Duluth Police Department says a man is in critical condition after an officer-involved shooting early Monday morning in the Piedmont Heights neighborhood.
Officers responded to a report of a domestic disturbance in the 3200 block of Piedmont Avenue just before 4 a.m. A woman said her 34-year-old husband had cut himself with a knife and was bleeding.
Police say the man locked himself in a basement room and blood was visible on the floor. Officers say they heard the man say he wanted to die and that he thought he had a half-hour left before he would bleed out.
Officers forced the door open and deployed a canine, but police say the man refused to drop the knife. An officer then fired his weapon, striking the man.
The man is in critical, but stable, condition at a Duluth hospital.
The officer who fired his duty weapon was placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure. The officer is a seven-year veteran of the Duluth Police Department.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is assisting in the investigation.
Some neighbors say this wasn't something they expected on their block.
"It's an amazing neighborhood," Darcy Hoops, who has lived in the neighborhood for about four years, said. "Everyone is just so friendly. I have the best neighbors possible. Very safe."
Bill Lee has been living just down the block from the scene since the 1960s. He said he knows the family as "very nice people."
"Things like that happen, and there's not much we can do about it," Lee said. "We just have to live with them, and try to help people out if we can come to their assistance."
