The Duluth Airport Authority is asking for your input on a planned change to a runway at Sky Harbor Airport.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the Minnesota Department of Transportation are requiring the change because of trees hindering the approach to the runway.
Instead of clearing the trees, the airport would like to build the runway into the bay.
On Thursday, the airport authority was fielding questions at the Inn on Lake Superior on their environmental assessment of the project.
"What we've tried to do through this process is be a good neighbor, be compassionate about those needs as well as with our primary mission as airport manager is to protect aviation safety in the area," said Tom Werner, Executive Director of the Duluth Airport Authority.
The runway would be 2,600 feet in length and compared to the existing runway. Approximately 69,800 cubic yards of fill over 7.49 acres would be placed in Superior
Bay to accommodate the construction, according to the environmental assessment.
Their plan, called the preferred alternative," tilts the direction of the runway away from some old-growth trees, and would avoid cutting any trees.
The airport authority will be taking public comments for the next 10 days.
