A stabbing involving a UMD football player is under investigation by the Duluth Police Department.
Police said 22-year-old Austin Sikorski is recovering at St. Luke's after a stabbing early Saturday morning. Police got the call before 2 a.m. at the intersection of West Superior Street and Lake Avenue.
DPD Spokesperson Jim Hansen said Sikorski was found with a stab wound in his lower right abdomen. Hansen said Sikorrski is out of the Intensive Care Unit and his condition is stable. He said they were able to interview him Sunday night.
When Eyewitness News checked for a condition update Monday, a St. Luke's spokesperson said Sikorski did not want that information released.
Hansen said they do have a person of interest in this case, but no one has been arrested and no charges have been filed. Hansen did not know if the person of interest and Sikorski knew each other.
Sikorski is going into his senior year as a starting running back. Last season, Sikorski scored 16 touchdowns and was seventh in the conference in rushing with more than 96 yards per game.
The University of Minnesota, Duluth released the following statement Monday.
"We are aware of an incident involving a UMD student and are in the process of gathering details, our primary concern at this time is for his well being," UMD Spokesperson Lori Melton said. "The matter is being handled by the Duluth Police Department."
As far as the season goes, practices don't start for two weeks. UMD's first football game is September 6.
