Wood Bats in the Art Von Tournament

For the first time the tournament has a wood bat division, which features eight teams. This morning, Esko and Duluth Central used the lumber. The idea for a wood bat division came from tournament coordinator Scott Allen, who says there have been a few broken bats, but even a few home runs, and overall, it's just a great throwback for America's Pastime.

Scott Allen said, "You just can't reproduce the sound of the bat, the crack of the bat and the kids are just having a blast with it and putting the pine tar on the bat and it is just baseball and that is what it really comes down to. The kids get to experience it sooner, rather than later and in the old days, they did use wood bats and we have kind of lost that and the kids don't even know how to swing a wood bat correctly these days, so we teach that before each game so that they'll know how to swing and get the best pop out of the bat and allow it to last a little longer before they break, because occasionally, they will crack."
