Hundreds of people came out to the 9th annual Lakefest event at Barkers Island in Superior Saturday.

Many bands took the stage for the event that included live music, games, food, prizes, face painting and more.

This year, organizers used "extreme couponing" tactics to help give away non-perishable food items, hygiene supplies, baby food, diapers, school supplies among other things.

Rose Litman said the organizers diligently cut coupons and purchasing most items with 50-70 percent off their bill. She said they averaged 79 percent savings on their way to their goal of serving more than 500 families by supplying them with the necessary items to help them beat financial woes.

"We learned a lot and how to stretch the dollar even further and help the families," Litman said. "If you look around you can see them with their bag full of groceries or school supplies or whatever their needs are. They know what it is. They get to pick it out. We don't, so it's something that's curtailed to them."
