El Dorado Bar in Oliver, Wis. held a fundraiser appreciating both its customers and the veterans who owner Todd Pfeffer said do so much for the United States.
"The veterans are shortchanged a lot of the time and that ain't right," Pfeffer said. "We can't dictate to the government on how they spend the money, but what we can do is help by doing stuff like this."
The fundraiser started at 11 a.m. with a horseshoe tournament, a raffle and food. Pfeffer said all the proceeds from the event go toward the Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans' Duluth chapter.
Later Durbin Keeney set up shirts that pay tribute to veterans--especially his dad who passed away. His company's called "Relentless We Stand," and proceeds from his shirt sales go toward helping homeless and distressed veterans--the same cause Pfeffer is working toward.
MACV's regional director Steve Saari said homelessness is a real problem both around the country and in northern Minnesota and Wisconsin.
"It's wonderful to see the community come together to fill some gaps we have in veterans service, especially for homeless veterans services here in the northland," Saari said.
Saturday's event was the second of its kind for the bar. Pfeffer said last year's fundraiser, combined with the El Dorado's weekly meat raffle proceeds, raised more than $16,000 for homeless veterans.
Cory Jorgensen has served 28 years and said it's this type of appreciation for veterans in distressed that doesn't go unnoticed.
"(Pfeffer) thanks us all the time ... There's always some sort of veterans something going on in the bar," Cory Jorgensen, who has served 28 years, said.
