Spirit Valley Days is celebrating 35 years of appreciating the West Duluth neighborhood this year.
The weekend-long event began Wednesday with the Miss West Duluth pageant, a pet parade and a classic car show.
About 250 Northlanders displayed their old, new and customized hotrods. Organizers said the car show has started to outgrow its West Duluth Kmart parking lot location.
Earlier in the day, Animal Allies and From Top Knots to Tails sponsored a pet parade. About 20 pets--including dogs, a hedgehog and a fish-- dressed up and competed for the title of "Best Dressed."
About an hour later, there was a different type of beauty pageant. Some Northland teens competed for the "Miss West Duluth" title. The winner of that pageant will make her first appearance at the American Legion pancake breakfast tomorrow.
Events continue throughout the week. The American Legion’s pancake breakfast will be held Thursday morning along with Duluth’s biggest summer parade will starting at 6 p.m. Friday’s events include live music and a street dance, and there will be more family events during the rest of the weekend.
Endangered Missing Duluth Teen Sought
The Duluth Police Department is investigating a report that a teenager was pulled into a minivan against her will on Wednesday afternoon. Police are describing 14-year-old Kaytlyn Rae Quintana as an endangered missing person.
Superior Murder Victim Described as Great Friend
Friends and community show support for a victim's family after a fatal shooting in Superior Tuesday night. The 20-year-old victim was described as kind, dedicated and a great friend.

Updated: Police ID Victim in Superior Homicide, Still Searching for Suspect
The Superior Police Department has released the name of a homicide victim in Superior Tuesday evening. They say 20-year-old Garth H. Velin of Superior was killed. Police say they are still searching for the person responsible.
