A farm fresh alternative to stale cinema returns for its 11th season in the big old barn in Wrenshall Friday and Saturday.

The Free Range Film Festival has been a cult favorite in the Northland since it started screening films in 2003, and this year it continues its successful mix of local premieres and international standouts.

We had organizer Annie Dugan on the show to tell us more about this year's festival. Annie says she always loves the eclectic lineup of films. She says it means the audience will be delighted as well as challenged.

This year's lineup includes animated shorts, documentaries and a full length narrative feature.

There is also a unique sub-theme that has developed this year -- the jigsaw puzzle. The festival will open with a documentary by local filmmaker Mike Scholtz that follows the competitive world of jigsaw puzzling. The movie "Wicker Kittens" was a festival favorite at SXSW in Austin, Texas and will make its local premiere on Friday.

The festival will be at the Free Range Film Barn on 909 County Road 4 in Wrenshall, MN.

It runs from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday. Films start up again on Saturday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., and 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Head to freerangfilm.com for the full film lineup.
