With Representative Janet Bewley vying for retiring Senator Bob Jauch's 25th Senate District office, Wisconsin's 74th Assembly seat is open.

Wednesday night, the two democratic candidates hoping for her position participated in a debate at the Great Lakes Visitor Center in Duluth.

Mining was a issue central to the debate.

"The problem is not can we mine this area or not. The problem is the fact that the mining law is so irresponsible at this point that it doesn't even vaguely reflect the form of law we had," said Graham Garfield of Mason.

Garfield just graduated from UW-Superior as the student body president. He said the current mining bill needs to be repealed, with a more responsible bill to replace it.

Garfield's opponent, Beth Meyers, shared similar views.

"We all have cars. There is metal in the cars. There is salt on our table that is mined. Most people support responsible mining. I do not believe the mining law today that we have is responsible," she said.

Meyers said it is not about being pro-mining or anti-mining, it's about mining responsibly.

Meyers is a 4th generation Bayfield County resident and serves on the county board.

The 74th Assembly district covers Bayfield, Ashland, Iron and Price counties, and parts of others.

August 12 is the primary election.
