Multiple campers were injured by falling trees when a storm came through northern St. Louis County early Tuesday morning.

In one incident, two women with serious injuries were taken out of the Loon Lake area by plane. The St. Louis County Rescue Squad said they had trees laying on them for several hours. Others in their party had less severe injuries.

Those injured in the Loon Lake incident include a 53-year-old woman from Minneapolis, a 62-year-old woman from St. Cloud, and a 60-year-old woman from Northfield, Vermont.

In another incident about ten miles away, two people were injured while camping out near Lady Boot Bay on Lac La Croix Lake.  Kirk Sanchez, 47, and Hayden Toups, 13, were inside different tents when they were injured at around 2:45 a.m.  They were among a group of 17 people at the site.

The rescue squad received assistance from Zup's Resort owner Mark Zupancich to transport the victims to a marina, where they were transferred to for an ambulance trip to the Virginia hospital. The two were rescued by about 7:30 a.m.

Both victims in the Lady Boot Bay incident are from Louisiana.  Their injuries are not life-threatening.  A family friend told WBRZ-TV that Sanchez was protecting his son when the storm came through and suffered a broken arm.

Rescue Squad Lt. Kurt Erickson said that the rescue was possible because of the good coordination between the first responders, the outfitter, Zupancich, and the rescue squad. He also said the group had a satellite phone to call for help.
