MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Election observers in Wisconsin still won't be allowed to use cameras at the polls.

The Government Accountability Board on Monday decided against lifting the ban on poll observers taking pictures or video while watching the process of people registering and signing in to vote.

The Republican co-chairs of committees in charge of elections had requested the change. But the board, after hearing concerns about how cameras could intimidate voters, voted 4-2 to keep the restriction in place.

The proposed rule now goes to the Legislature, which could choose to rewrite the rule to allow cameras.

The rights of poll watchers has been hotly debated in recent years, as supporters say they play an important role in making sure the law is followed on election day.
