Renegade Theater Company: "Red"

We had a visit from Jody Kujawa, who plays Mark Rothko in "Red." He gave us a little background on the play, as well as some inside information on the artistic side of things. Kujawa is quite the comedian, so this role was a change for him. He told us about the challenges and rewards of the transition.

The show premiered Thursday night at the Teatro Zuccone on 222 East Superior St. in downtown Duluth. It runs through June 21, and again on June 26 and 28.   Tickets are $18 for adults, and $15 for students and seniors.

About the Play:

Written by Academy Award-nominee John Logan and winner of the 2010 Tony Award for Best Play, "Red" is a searing portrait of artist ambition and vulnerability. The show, presented by the Renegade Theater Company, features a cast of two in a fascinating examination of the fine line between being a visionary and being a sell-out. 

Plot:

Master abstract expressionist Mark Rothko has just landed the biggest commission in the history of modern art, a series of murals for New York's famed Four Seasons Restaurant. In the two fascinating years that follow, Rothko works feverishly with his young assistant, Ken, in his audio on the Bowery. But when Ken gains the confidence to challenge him, Rothko faces the agonizing possibility that his crowning achievement could also become his undoing.
