Over the next few years, downtown Duluth could see over 400 new jobs and all from just one project.
There's hardly anything left of the old KDLH building downtown. Tuesday, city and state leaders broke ground on the new Maurices headquarters, located at 425 West Superior Street.
Developers say they will create 250 construction jobs over the two years they build. Maurices also expects to add professional jobs. Since they are moving into a bigger space, they'll have room to grow their 425 jobs to nearly 600 at their headquarters.
The new headquarters will span an entire block and stand 11 stories tall. The building will be approximately 200,000 square feet.
"As we've said before, Maurices was born in Duluth and will stay in Duluth," said company president George Goldfarb.
Maurices has been in downtown Duluth since 1931. The company has grown over the years and right now, their headquarters is spread out among three downtown buildings. They currently occupy 150,000 square feet of office space.
"You know it's been remodeled, we're a little tight, it's still a good working space, but we feel like we'll all be closer together when we are all in one building," said Sara Moore, the director of marketing production at Maurices.
Long-time employees like Moore say they can't wait to all be in one, big building. It not only means more space for the 425 associates already part of the Maurices team, but it also makes room for possible future employees, such as human resources intern Lauren Lundstrom.
"I haven't taken that many classes in the business world yet so I'm trying to get a jump start and I've had the greatest time,"she said at the groundbreaking.
Governor Mark Dayton was in town for the event. He said the project is huge for Duluth's downtown, but that's not all.
"What's important for Duluth is important for the whole region and what's important to the region is important for the whole state," said the governor.
The new headquarters is the largest downtown commercial development in Duluth history. The project will cost over $70 million. Maurices will invest $50 million, and the City of Duluth and the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) has committed $20 million.
Construction begins next month and the company hopes to move in to their new headquarters by spring 2016.
