On a quiet street some loud rumbles from an old friend in the Proctor School District.
"It was built in 1918," Bay View Elementary Principal Diane Morin said. "We've had several people come over and take pictures."
"Yesterday we had people with lawn chairs out watching it," Superintendent John Engelking said.
They're talking about the demolition of the historic building at Bay View Elementary. It's served the district for almost a century, but renovations were in order.
"It was not cost effective to maintain this current building," Morin said. "The classrooms will be much larger, much more state of the art."
The demolition will make way for a new multi-use room and some offices. The school is also building sixteen more classrooms on the other side of the school.
Construction is also taking place at the middle school and high school. They're remodeling administrative offices forming a main entrance on Ugstad Road. Engelking said that means more security and better access for students.
The changes were made possible when voters approved a referendum a couple years ago. It was an extension of the 2001 bond referendum.
"We're really excited to do that and bring this to fruition without additional cost," Engelking said.
Construction on the 16 classrooms should be finished in time for school this fall.
Demolition of the historic building will be done this week and new construction will be complete in December.
