MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Officials with the Department of Human Services are disagreeing with experts who say one man in the Minnesota Sex Offender Program should be released.

In documents filed Wednesday, attorneys for the state say the man is a danger to the public and needs inpatient treatment. They say his commitment is constitutional.

Experts have been evaluating patients at the MSOP as part of a lawsuit that claims the program is unconstitutional because it amounts to a life sentence. The experts found there's little evidence to show that this patient is a risk.

The state disagrees. But, officials at MSOP have petitioned to have the man transferred to a less restrictive environment within the program that's designed to help transition patients into society. A hearing on that petition is on July 2.
