A fire caused $30,000 in damages to the Hibbing Public Utilities Commission on Saturday night.
The Hibbing Fire Department responded to a report of heavy smoke coming from the roof of the steam plant at just before 9 p.m. Fire officials said the blaze was located on the wood biomass side of the plant.
They said there was a fire on the main floor, which was extinguished by plant personnel. Fire officials also said there was a working fire on the roof deck of the seven-story plant.
The fire was declared under control at just after 10:30 p.m. Fire officials said a large portion of the roof insulation needed to be removed to check for fire extension.
Fire, smoke and water damages to the building were estimated at $30,000. There were no reports of injuries.
Fire officials said there was no interruption to the plant's service. They said they initially believed there was an ammonia leak, but it turned out to be a small leak in an urea tank. Fire officials said urea is a fairly safe fluid, and the leak was stopped by the plant workers.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
Multiple agencies responded, including Chisholm Fire, Chisholm Ambulance, Keewatin Fire, Virginia Fire, Buhl Fire, Nashwauk Fire, Nashwauk Ambulance, Cherry Fire, Hibbing Police and Hibbing Public Works.
