Registration for Grandma's Marathon closed at midnight on Saturday. By the next morning, the registration link was open once again to help out some fellow runners.
"You train for a marathon, you've been looking forward to this and then to be told nope you can't do it... it's heartbreaking," said Bob Gustafson, the public relations director with Grandma's Marathon.
Hundreds of runners were disappointed Sunday when the Minneapolis Marathon was canceled due to lightning.
"As soon as they canceled it the phone started ringing," said Gustafson.
He said the decision to reopen registration for the full marathon was an easy one. Gustafson said they expect a couple hundred extra runners to sign up. About 7,900 runners are signed up for the 2014 marathon, which is 500 more than last year.
Registration for Grandma's full marathon now ends Monday at 11:59 p.m.
So, the next logical question: where will all these runners stay?
Hotels are filling up but there are still plenty of college dorm rooms available.
"We have these two residence halls to fill and we still have about 60 rooms left, which is pretty awesome considering it's so close to the marathon," said Bailey Burns, who works for campus housing at UW-Superior.
Burns said they can house more than 200 runners and supporters for Grandma's Marathon weekend. The dorms may not be hotel luxury, but Burns said it's pretty fun.
"It's definitely the biggest group of people we get all summer. People are coming from all over the place, it's a really exciting time," said Burns.
UMD and St. Scholastica also have rooms available.
And while hotel rooms are booking up, Visit Duluth tells Eyewitness News there is still space. Seventy-seven rooms are still available for both Friday and Saturday, and 126 rooms are available for just Saturday night.
But Visit Duluth said they will get booked, because every year there's always a big rush to book a bed right before race day.
