A big star is in town for the Duluth Superior Film Festival. Actress, author and advocate Patty Duke is also taking time to talk about mental health and the need to break social stigmas.
Duke filmed the movie You'll Like My Mother at Duluth Glensheen Mansion more than 40 years ago. The made-for-TV thriller brought her to the historic estate and says the hallowed halls echoed the scary script of the film.
However, while filming the movie in 1972, Duke says she was dealing with a scary situation of her own. She didn't know it at the time, but Duke was battling bipolar disorder.
"I had, kind of a mixed manic and depressed state," Duke said. "Of course nobody could know about it. I had to put up the facade.
She says it took her more than a decade to get help. Since then she has been advocating for mental health awareness - so that no one has to suffer in silence.
Although her advisors told her not to speak out about her struggles with mental illness, Duke said it was something she did not want to hide. "I couldn't help it, I had to do it," Duke said
Since speaking out about mental illness Duke has become a real model in the community - advocating that others speak out to break social stigmas.
"I believe philosophically that I got into acting on a fluke, but that brought my name and persona to a place where people would tune in," Duke said.
Tune in to Good Morning Northland Wednesday morning for Patty Duke's full interview.
